YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television READ ME
for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95
This Read Me file contains answers to frequently asked questions
about installing and running YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television.
Installing YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television
=============================
Before installing YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television, disable all
anti-virus software and any TSRs on your computer. To disable
your anti-virus software, consult the documentation that came
with your anti-virus software.
If you interrupt the Installer application during the
installation process, it may leave some files on your hard disk.
To restart the installation process, please remove these files
and run the installer again.
WINDOWS COMPATIBILITY
=============================
YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television can be played on any 486- or
586-based PC running Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.
If you are using the Virtual Memory feature in Windows 95 and you
are running very low on free disk space, you may experience "Out
of Memory" errors in YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television. Check your
Virtual Memory settings, free some hard disk space and then restart
YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television.
If you run SHARE, please disable it before you try to uninstall
YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television. You can disable it by commenting
out the SHARE line from your autoexec.bat file. You can re-enable
SHARE as soon as YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television has been removed
from your PC.
YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television Performance
=============================================
YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television performs best when your video
display is set to 256 colors. Some PC hardware may not be fast
enough to play the game well in higher color video modes.
If you experience sound or video performance problems with YOU
DON'T KNOW JACK Television, please make sure that neither Microsoft
Office Toolbar nor the Norton Navigator Task Bar (or any
similar utility) is running when you run YOU DON'T KNOW JACK
Television. These utilities can negatively affect the performance
of many games.
Tip: You can temporarily disable most Windows utilities by
holding down the Shift key while Windows is loading. These
utilities will launch normally the next time you restart Windows.
If you still experience sound stuttering, make sure that you have
installed the latest drivers for your sound card. Contact the
manufacturer of your sound card for more information on the
availability of driver updates. Updates can usually be downloaded
for free from the World Wide Web or from your manufacturer's own
electronic bulletin board.
Fine-Tuning the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television Sound System
======================================================
The YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television sound system can be fine-tuned
in Windows 95. If you experience problems after trying the
above tips, use the following instructions to tune the YOU DON'T
KNOW JACK Television sound system:
1. Open the file YDKJ.INI in the 'Stuff' folder. The 'Stuff'
folder can be found in the directory where you installed YOU
DON'T KNOW JACK Television. Simply double-clicking the file should
launch the Notepad editor.
2. In the YDKJ.INI file, find the line that reads
HighPrioritySoundThread=0 and change it to
HighPrioritySoundThread=1.
3. Save YDKJ.INI and quit Notepad.
4. Run YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television again and listen for
improvements or changes in sound quality.
If you are still experiencing problems, open YDKJ.INI again,
and continue with the following steps:
5. Look near the end of YDKJ.INI for the line that says
ObservedSoundThreadWakeupError=<number> (where <number> is some
value).
If the number is less than 150 or greater than 600 then skip
ahead to step 7.
If <number> is greater than 150 and less than 600, then find
the line that says SoundThreadWakeUpError=150 and change it to
SoundThreadWakeUpError=<number> where <number> is the same value
as in the "ObservedSoundThreadWakeupError=" line. Save YDKJ.INI
and quit Notepad.
6. Run YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television again and listen for
improvements or changes in sound quality.
7. If you are still experiencing problems, open YDKJ.INI again,
as in step 1. Change the line that you changed in step 6 back
to its original setting, that is, find
SoundThreadWakeUpError=<number> and change it to
SoundThreadWakeUpError=150
8. Find the line that says UseThreadedSoundMixer=1 and
change it to UseThreadedSoundMixer=0. Save YDKJ.INI and quit
Notepad.
9. Run YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television again and listen for
improvements or changes in sound quality.
